Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

A typical Tudor market town on the confluence of the River Severn and River Avon. The most prominent building in the town is the Abbey.

The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury, (commonly known as Tewkesbury Abbey), in the English county of Gloucestershire, is a parish church and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.

Tewkesbury Abbey had been a centre for worship since the 7th century, becoming a priory in the 10th. The present building was started in the early 12th century. It was unsuccessfully used as a sanctuary in the Wars of the Roses.

After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became the parish church for the town. George Gilbert Scott led Restoration in the late 19th century. The church and churchyard within the abbey precincts includes tombs and memorials to many of the aristocracy of the area. But the Abbey is not the only interesting building in the town. There are many other beautiful buildings

The old mill is situated at the bottom of Mill Street, nestled on the edge of the river Avon.

Dated from 1793 with some additions completed in the early to mid 19th century. It makes the start of a beautiful walk across the bridge to the Hamm when the weather is nice. The Hamm is a part of the flood plane between the Avon and the Severn.

If you are travelling to Tewkesbury along the A38 from the south (Gloucester direction) you will come to the Gupshill roundabout, here you will see these resolute knights guarding the way in. Well not literally, but I thing they definitely add something to the experience of visiting this medieval market town.
