Chicago – February 2025

Well, I am learning everywhere worth a visit in the US needs commitment.. IT’S MASSIVE!!!

We decided to do a road trip from Minneapolis to Chicago in February???.. A 6.5 hour haul for a single overnighter…..

The road trip was surprisingly enjoyable on the way there, and as we got close to the city, we could see the size and scale of it rising in the distance.

One thing to bear in mind about Chicago, is its nick name, The Windy City! Whatever the ambient temperature is, its not going to feel anywhere near that. The day we went in February, the outside temperature was -12 or so, but when we got out of the car at the hotel, it actually took our breath away…

That aside, Chicago is a great place to womble around. North Michigan Avenue (The Magnificent Mile) for shopping, Milwaukee Avenue & Hubbard Street to name just 2 have plenty of bars and places to eat. Everywhere appears friendly.

I love the place, It has a real vibe going on.

A brief History of Chicago

Early History and Founding

Indigenous Roots: The region was long inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Odawa, who called the area home. The name Chicago comes from an Algonquian word for wild garlic or onion.

Growth and Industrialization

Railroad Hub: By 1848, the arrival of railroads turned Chicago into America’s primary transport and grain-shipping hub.
Great Chicago Fire: The devastating fire of October 1871 destroyed large parts of the downtown area, leaving 100,000 homeless.
Rebuilding and Skyscrapers: The city rebuilt rapidly, giving rise to the world’s first steel-framed skyscrapers, such as the Home Insurance Building in 1885.World’s Fairs: Chicago hosted the massive World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 and A Century of Progress in 1933, showcasing modern innovation to tens of millions of visitors

Modern Era

The Great Migration: In the early-to-mid 20th century, hundreds of thousands of Black Americans moved from the rural South to Chicago for industrial jobs, shaping the city’s rich culture and blues music scene. Prohibition: During the 1920s, the city became famous for organized crime and notorious figures like Al Capone.
Global Hub: Today, Chicago stands as a dominant center for global finance, culture, architecture, and higher education in the American Midwest.
